Position located in Marin County north of San Francisco in a public school setting for 4 hours per day Monday-Friday
during the 2009-10 school year with a child who primarily uses SEE or PSE.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • certified by the Registry for the Deaf (RID) or Level 4 EIPA or ESSE.
  • previous interpreting experience with aurally exceptional individuals and/or groups preferably in an educational
    setting
  • knowledge of various sign language systems,(particularly SEE), finger spelling and gestures
  • knowledge of proper English usage, grammar and punctuation
  • awareness of Deaf culture, basic personal/social problems and learning disabilities associated with deaf persons

Sign Language Interpreter needed to perform interpreting and reverse interpreting of classroom lectures, general

Requirements:

REPORTS TO: Lead Interpreter and/or Deaf Education Coordinator
DEPT./SCHOOL: Regional Day School Program for the Deaf

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Interpret in sign language all communication that occurs in the classroom for students who are deaf or hard of        
hearing and require total communication. Assist the teacher in reverse interpreting comments, questions, or responses by
these students. Work under the supervision of a teacher/team leader/ supervisor certified in education of the deaf and/or
hard of hearing.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Licensed by the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters under the auspices of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and
    Hard of Hearing or by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
  • Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to work well with children
  • Ability to interpret in or willingness to learn SEE 2 sign system
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Willingness to execute written employment contract with Plano ISD

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.
  • Assist the student in interpreting and/or reversing lectures, questions/answers, discussions, etc.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to communicate in the classroom and to complete assignments as
    assigned by the lead interpreter or team leader.
  • Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom as assigned by the
    lead interpreter or team leader.
  • Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students if deemed necessary by the lead
    interpreter or team leader.
  • Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Follow all rules, regulations, and policies of Plano ISD and follow directives from superiors.
  • Follow attendance policy as assigned by supervisor.
  • Perform other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or supervisor.
