The S.E.E. Center for the
Advancement of Deaf Children Announces:
The 2008
Skillshops in Signing Exact English
and Educational Interpreting
These Skillshops are designed for individuals interested in learning S.E.E. and to help those already using
S.E.E. to improve their expressive and receptive signing skills. Intensive work is done in groups from beginner
to advanced levels. Each group is limited to approximately 15 participants. Sessions are geared for adult level,
not appropriate for children under 16 years of age. Participants at full week summer sessions, for an additional
fee, can take a skills evaluation and receive a certificate indicating proficiency level. Those evaluated also
receive detailed follow-up covering sign production, fluency, fingerspelling, expressiveness, and speech readability.
The Signing Exact English Skillshops are for teachers, aides, parents
and others who want to learn as well as those who use Signing Exact English and wish to improve their vocabulary,
fluency, and expressiveness. Participants review S.E.E. vocabulary and do extensive work on additional signs, visual
features of sign language, song and story telling techniques. Recent research findings are covered.
The Educational Interpreting Skillshops are for persons employed
in elementary and secondary schools as educational interpreters, using any form of signed English. Work is done
on vocabulary expansion, fluency, finger spelling, expressiveness and practicing to a variety of timed tapes. Problem
solving, discussions of interpreting ethics in the educational setting and how-do-you-handle sessions also included.
NEW
A Skillshop for Teachers of SEE (Locations
for 2007 to be announced. No locations for 2006). For those teaching or
wishing to teach SEE classes.
Students will actually teach the classes themselves, given the opportunity to exhibit, videotape, evaluate, and
be evaluated for their skill in teaching the various topics necessary fo fully deliver SEE. These would include
philosophy, rules, vocabulary, components of sign language, comparative qualities with ASL, games and other aspects
of the total picture. Each participant should bring whatever s/he uses as teaching tools to share. To be gained
from this Skillshop: confidence in teaching, a certificate* that tells employers that the SEE teacher is qualified
to teach SEE... and many new ideas from the work of fellow participants.
*Please note that in order to be certified as a SEE instructor an individual will have to:
1. have completed the E.S.S.E.; T (this is for teachers) or the E.S.S.E.; I (for interpreters) with a suitable
rating in both expressive and receptive areas, and
2. be judged satisfactory by the reviewers of the efforts of the individual during the training session.
These results will not be immediately available.
